CANON HISTORY:

CANON PERSONALITY:
The first impression that Mika gives upon conversation is that he's childish for his age in hobbies and mannerisms. He speaks in a manner similar to someone much younger, where he trails on his sentences after the fact, has verbal tics in his dialogue that are associated with children in Japanese writing, and speaks with a bit of exaggeration like a child would. He has a fondness of stuffed animals, which come up in his cards and the projects he takes on as a member of the handicrafts club, and eating cheap candy over more luxurious and expensive sweets. He also comes off as rather simple and gullible for a high school student. There's also an air of innocence about him, as he's kindhearted and lacks ulterior motives. However, like a child, he isn't eloquent, and his emotions can be expressed very harshly and without restraint.
One key trait of Mika is loyalty, or perhaps devotion. He's a member of the idol unit Valkyrie, which is led by Shu Itsuki. He is absolutely devoted to Shu because of him reaching out to Mika in the past and seeing some sort of worth in him, when Mika often sees himself as a burden. For that reason, he stays by Shu's side despite being verbally belittled by him for his lack of grace clashing with Shu's perfectionism, and remaining in what is essentially a fallen-from-grace idol unit that the two struggle to keep afloat. Mika however, believes in both Shu and Valkyrie, refusing to give up on both of them out of sheer loyalty to his family and home. An idol of the top unit, fine, at Yumenosaki even says that he has potential that is wasted in a dying unit like Valkyrie, but Mika responds that he doesn't care because ultimately he has faith in where he is, even saying he would give up his life for Valkyrie. Even Shu is somewhat at a loss for how much Mika is willing to do for him and their unit, when Mika comments that it's something he might not understand (even noting the irony when Shu is more intelligent than him), and yet does not mind because he is happy to be an idol with Shu and trying to regain what they've lost from waning under the new system, when they were once at the top before. Mika has low self-esteem, so the notion that he has a use, and is found useful by someone is what keeps him loyal to Shu as a pillar.
The loyalty leads into Mika having a strong sense of following principles, sort of in the way a child would try to follow the instructions they're told to the letter or maybe, a minion following a villain (the parallel is appropriate as explained in a bit). However, aside from the instructions and restrictions of the controlling Shu like his diet and training, there are personal beliefs that Mika tries to stick to, even if he himself, who possesses a kind heart and doesn't truly have the conviction, struggles with maintaining. For example, because of how Eichi Tenshouin traumatized Shu in the past with a crushing loss in a competition, Shu wanted to get back at Eichi's unit with his own hands. However, they were defeated by a new unit in the main story. Bitter, Shu holds disdain towards that unit and the student producer who helped them, the player character (for convenience, I'll refer to her as the default name, Anzu), for taking that opportunity. Mika too, holds a grudge against them. He originally meets Anzu on friendly terms, but when he realizes she's the famed produce that helped the unit Trickstar, he tries to shift his attitude to something more antagonistic. He tries to distance others that he deems the "enemy" by accusing them of tricking him, because he's aware he isn't bright. However, it does falter in the face of how often, those he tries to dislike are often far from bad people. In his thoughts, he regrets pushing people away to maintain such a status quo, especially when they were trying to help him.
There is no doubt that Mika has a very kind and sensitive heart. He doesn't like hurting others and feels guilt when he does. It's especially apparent when he responds very well to kindness of others. While Shu is rather unsociable as an idol towards audiences and fans, Mika's genuine nature makes him able to talk to their fans, and he appreciates their support. Often, he thinks of others first before him, which even includes those aforementioned grudges he set up. For example, he's jealous of upperclassmen Kuro Kiryu because in a way he's closer to Shu and they both have mutual respect for eachother. However, he'll reach out to Kuro in order to help out to help Shu. Another is in regards to Nazuna Nito, where they have a complicated relationship, and Mika is quick to throw insults and distrust him because he was a former member of Valkyrie who left them due to Shu's less than stellar treatment of him and Mika, but at the a time where Valkyrie fell from grace due to the new system, leading to Mika believing he is a traitor. However, he cannot outright hate him. Anzu actually takes advantage of this, getting Mika to accept an ice cream coupon where he normally wouldn't because Nazuna had won it (earlier, he refused the food brought to him by Anzu and Nazuna) by threatening to rip up the ticket if he didn't take it, which he didn't want to happen because he still cares for Nazuna as he is. Despite outward feelings, he recognizes the kindness that people treat him with, and as a gentle-hearted person himself, it's something he cannot truly overlook. Nazuna even refers to him as a such a kind person, he is better than how immaturely he can act sometimes.
Mika doesn't think highly of himself. He has complexes regarding his feminine name and his mismatched-colored eyes (one gold, one aqua), as he presumably was teased for them at some point in his life. According to him, he is also unused to the company of a lot of males because he grew up with girls, making him come off as very shy and nervous around guys and strangers who might notice his strange name or eyes. His tastes are geared towards both cute and creepy things, which makes it hard for him to find peers to connect with on similar interests, according to him. With the way he is often described by Shu with a variety of unflattering words, as well his own lack of wit and grace, Mika has no issue being self-deprecating about himself, even in casual conversation. This leaves him preferring to be in the care of Shu who helps an otherwise "worthless" person (He lets Shu control many aspects of his life because of he doesn't think he can care for himself), but he can still be appreciative of those who can overlook his faults for his good points. Arashi, a classmate who often teases others, is unusually good friends with Mika from seeing how devoted and kind he is in person and supports him. Anzu and Nazuna's friendly natures and ability to see through or respect his hostile fronts also shake him up. Surprisingly though, he's also aware that he's foolish and gullible, to where he can use it as a defense to deflect or push away others, assuming others are lying to him or have personal motives for interacting with him. This is most notable with how he interacts with Anzu, constantly claiming he knows she'll deceive or trick him with her warm demeanor.
While Mika may have a good heart, his childish tendencies and inability to express how he truly feels in a mature fashion can leave him feeling lonely, bitter, and jealous to harsh degrees. He's often at odd at his actions for the sake of sticking to his principles. He comes up with excuses for his actions, trying to put others in a negative light. However, this also hurts him because he knows that the excuses or assumptions he makes are not true, worsening his self-esteem from guilt. He also has trouble with handling his negative emotions and expressing them in ways to resolve them with those who has conflicts with. While he's not bright and doesn't mind the harsh treatment by Shu in itself, he knows that Shu seems to take him for granted while valuing other schoolmates, becoming broody and jealous. The most prominent of these incidents is where during an important Live in winter (they're high-stakes competitions that reflects on a student's academic grades), he tries to maintain a cheerfully and oblivious despite the risk of him and Shu being expelled because Shu had fallen ill and couldn't participate in time. He snaps from the stress though, when Nazuna decides to participate in the Live as a temporary member of Valkyrie instead of his new unit to save them from the consequences. Feeling pitied and disgraced by whom he deems as a traitor, it's implied he would have attacked Nazuna had Arashi not intervened. This is thankfully resolved by Arashi reminding Mika to not throw away everything he worked for, and Nazuna validating Mika's bitter feelings but telling him that he won't run away from Mika's anger or forget his happier times in Valkyrie. In the end, what soothes him and means the most to Mika is others understanding his immature feelings, as difficult or unreasonable they may be.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Mika is a second-year high school student at Yumenosaki Academy, a school that has a course specifically prepared to trained idols. Mika is also a member of the prestigious idol unit Valkyrie, which is famous for its high level of technical skill in its performances, which put Valkyrie at the top in its heyday. Shu, the leader and a strict perfectionist, also trains or "maintains" both him and Mika to a high level of precision. As such, Mika has a decent amount of athleticism and muscle memory to perform routines to try and reach Shu's high standards. It's also noted by Nazuna and even Eichi that his voice is quite pretty, especially as someone who once practiced singing on his own rather than with Shu's guidance, because he was ignored in favor of Nazuna and treated as a back member for Valkyrie.

AU HISTORY:
Early Life: Mika is an only child born to a single mother and a father absent from the picture. When she moved to the United States, she was taught English by a friend with an accent, and passed it on to Mika as he grew up. He was timid, so the accent he picked up didn't seem as apparent. His mother works at a women's hostel in the city and once lived there at one point with a young Mika as part of an agreement. While his life has always been modest and not very wealthy, his relationship with his mother even to now is quite good. She always wants the best for him, and when he was given an opportunity to enroll him into a good charter school through some fortunate connections with her friends, she took it. However, while he did alright in school, classmates often overlooked him for his average grades and shy personality, and neighborhood boys would bully Mika. The school did bring something good to Mika's life though. He was decent when it came to creative. By what he considers chance, in high school he won an art contest at a gallery and was awarded a scholarship. Through some research and wondering where he'd want to go, he ended up being accepted Recolle University as a design student and resides at a dorm. While he's not actually sure what he wants to do with his life more seriously, he didn't want to let the scholarship go to waste.
Hobbies: Mika likes crafts! He isn't naturally talented at it so much as he puts a lot of effort into it, but he found that he liked making things he could give to people or that are "practical". There's something about making something whole from bits and pieces that he finds satisfying. He also likes light reading, like magazines and news stories due to having a low attention span and forgetting where he is in novel. This makes him surprisingly decent at studying though for some college courses, as the readings are in chunks (but cumulative exams scare him). He also collects stuffed animals, especially ones he can fix up or look unique on their own. He's also finds housework relaxing, but when it's done on his own terms.
Pre-College: To start, his real reason for attending college in Recolle was to distance himself from his old life. If he went straight to work or attended college locally, he'd be surrounded by those he grew up with who treated him less than kindly, which sounded very unpleasant for him. His mother also started a relationship with a longtime friend that Mika knew from his youth, which left him feeling like a burden. He could never communicate his personal problems very well to his mom either, and worried that he'd get in her life's way if they ever came up, especially when hers is going in a good direction. Thus, he moved out, even if he had reservations about an arts scholarship and its strict requirements.
College Life: Originally, Mika was pretty antisocial in college. He's from a poor family and hates being frivolous, so he stuck to doing things meant for the long term. He'd either be in his dorm doing his own thing (that he didn't share with others out of embarrassment), working part-time, or attending class. He wanted to stay in school and go unnoticed by others, being certain people would either bully him or feel sorry for his clumsiness. He didn't have long-lasting friendships as a child, and didn't feel like he would have them in college either. However, that greatly concerned his RA when he'd check up on Mika (he thought Mika's gentleness was going to waste or something), and Mika would avoid him at any opportunity, finding him annoying and nosy in his first year. When it comes down to it though, he couldn't leave that dorm for his second year, feeling like he owes the RA just a little bit for looking out for him. Now that he's a little more settled in as a sophomore, he find himself trying to help others outside of class, finding it fun and enjoying others' smiles. Currently, he's giving into a sense of curiosity he held back on, and tries to participate more into extracurriculars and what Recolle offers as a modern city.
AU PERSONALITY:
- Mika is much more independent in his AU than his canon self. However he still has a lack of confidence, and because he does not have a purpose like he does from staying at Shu's side, he's more confused about what he wants from life.
- Because he's less controlled by the rigors of Yumenosaki's idol system or Shu's influence, his commitments are towards school to maintain his scholarship, which leaves him not feeling as satisfied working as hard as he does.
- His tendency to put up fronts and push others away is not as hostile as it can get in canon. However, it's more out of hating pity and trying to prove himself as a functioning person. That leads to him coming off as a bit moody.
- He has a bit more freedom to help others, but through that he becomes a bit overloaded and is even more of a workaholic. He feels like he has to maintain the idea that he's always fine or that he should downplay his problems, because he's on his own and dislikes the idea he may be helpless.
- Mika is a lot more practical than his canon counterpart. It comes from living on his own and trying to be functional, where canon Mika accepts those failings because Shu takes care of him. In AU, Mika does things for a vague future benefit: part-time jobs for experience, schoolwork for a diploma, and living in a dorm to learn how to be an adult. He doesn't reach the levels of passion for his goals like Mika in canon though, and can be listless if he's overwhelmed.
- He is also less openly deprecating about himself. He's more careful about his image towards strangers. With friends though or when things are serious, he can admit to those faults of his very openly and show a side that is more honest. It's also a thing that would concern people, unlike how those in Yumenosaki accept his awkward eccentricities because of how eclectic the whole cast naturally is.
- He doesn't have a complex from naturally standing out like his canon self. He thinks he's ordinary, but alternates between being fine with it and other times wishing he was more "distinctive", because it might help him leave a better impression on others. In other words, he's ambivalent about his appearance, but doesn't dislike it as much as he does in canon.

SAMPLE
[ Flash sales of either blue or green merchandise are in full force today, and poor Mika can feel it as the unfortunate seasonal work at a department store in the Towers. He doesn't really get the fuss over what have been code-named "color sales", and he's an art student who has to recognize a good deal of shades and hues of any one color for projects. Working today is bad enough, but what's even worse is having to survey these shoppers who really aren't giving him the time of day. But it was this or working the cashier on this hectic shopping occasion, and the manager said this would be easier. That was nice of them to suggest it, and that's enough to convince Mika to treat his task seriously. It's also very important in the scheme of things. So when a shopper at this department store doesn't look like they're busy, he tries to approach them, holding an iPad to his chest. He would have preferred a clipboard, paper and pen; these things are expensive...! ]
H-hey! Do you have some time? If ya don't I understand, but I'd... the store'd appreciate it.
[ At least he's an employee of the store and not some badgerer, if his lanyard and the cap with the store's logo are a good indicator of that. Untangling his arms from how he held it so securely, he holds the tablet out, showing simple interface of a blue button and a green button on the screen. Sideways at first, but Mika corrects it with trembling hands. He tries to find his voice to be clearer in explaining what he's doing. ]
Which color do... do you like more, green or blue? Whichever one that gets the most votes an hour before the store closes will have a really big sale! Th-the stuff in that winnin' color, I mean. [ It's sort of a sales pitch he has to do, and he's sure he's screwing it up. In a small voice so others don't hear and bombard him just for what you get in the end: ] Ya get a coupon for participatin'.
[ To his surprise the person is interested! He was expecting them to shove the iPad back in his face. But once that customer finishes and takes the coupon with a rare, cherished "thank you", another customer took note and asked to participate. Mika smiles a little better this time as he explains the survey again, fumbling a sentence or two, but it's fine, he can hopefully make it to the end of the day. ]
